![]() ![]() ![]() These attacks will consume practically the entire power meter, but are quite potent, particularly in packed screens. In red HP, with 100% of your power meter, your character has access to their Desperation Move (DM). Not quite as effective as a full charge, but could be a smart way to get enough power back in a pinch. You will also restore a moderate portion of your power meter when you get back up after being knocked down from an enemy attack, explosion, etc. This is the fastest way to recover lost energy without having a power-restoring pickup available. If you stand still for a moment, your character will begin 'charging up' (think Dragonball Z or some over the top anime power up moment). Some special attacks, such as everyone's universal J+A special attack, do not consume meter unless they actually strike an opponent, but will still provide i-frames (invulnerability frames). Specials generally consume around 1/3 of your total maximum power meter. Combo attacks or multi-hitting attacks that you defend against can drain your meter quickly, so be careful about block punishes! Blocking attacks doesn't result in any 'chip damage' doing damage to your HP, rather your power meter will deplete for every instance a hit is blocked. Everybody can block by holding the A button for a few frames, and continuing to hold. While in your dash/run state, you can also move vertically by continuing to hold forward, then moving up or down on the vertical plane as you would normally. Everybody can dash/run by tapping forward in the direction they are facing twice, OR this can be shortcut with a quick b,f (back, forward, then hold forward) motion. A powerful boss enemy awaits player at the end of each stage. ![]() Health levels can be replenished by finding food that lies hidden in breakable crates scattered through the stages. However, some of the player's health is lost in the process. These powerful attacks reduce the power meter but it does replenish itself after a few seconds. ![]() The power meter allows for the special attacks to be made, either by pressing both standard attack and jump simultaneously, or by pressing the special attack button. Each player-character has both a life bar and a power meter. Weapons have limited uses and will disappear if the player is disarmed by an enemy too often or when the player moves to a new area. Items such as weapons, health recovery items, and items awarding extra points can be picked up by standing over one and pressing the attack button. A thrown enemy can be tossed at another for additional damage. When an enemy is grabbed, the player can perform a grab attack by pressing the attack button or perform a throw by tilting the joystick left or right. Enemies can be grabbed simply by walking into one of them. The final blow of the combo can be changed to a throw if the player moves the joystick in the opposite direction just before landing it. Pressing the standard attack button repeatedly when attacking will trigger a combo from the player-character. Controls consist of an eight-way joystick and three buttons standard attack, jump and special attack. Guardians is a horizontally-scrolling beat-em-up for one or two players featuring eight selectable characters.
